* Spring is here and the City of Ainsworth is hosting their FREE City Wide Cleanup to Ainsworth Residents.  The event will be held on May 10, 2008.  The City is encouraging all residents to participate in cleaning up their property and alleys of all debris that may include tree limbs, grass and yard waste, assortment of wood products, old appliances, iron, metal items and etc.  Each owner or tenant will be able to take the debris to the KBR Solid Waste Transfer Station FREE of charge during this day from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.  Appliances that have Freon will have to be tagged by any individual or business that handles Freon in order for the Transfer station to take those items. The City is also asking those residents that have old vehicles to contact a salvage dealer to haul your vehicle off of your property.  The utilization of this Free cleanup day will prevent the City from having to take action against owners of those properties deemed to be a nuisance under the City’s Municipal Code.  Property that is littered with trash, grass, trees, pieces of wood, appliances, any machinery or vehicle that are inoperative or lost their identity or unable to perform their intended functions is considered a misdemeanor. City Administrator Thornburg hopes that everyone takes this opportunity to cleanup his or her property and alleyways.  Also, I encourage anyone that has a pickup or trailer and knows of someone that may need help in disposing of their debris to volunteer those resources.  Any business or individual who has construction or demolition debris are not able to participate in this event. If anyone has questions, please contact the City office at 387-2494 or stop in at the office.

* Ainsworth PEO will meet at 7 at the home of Danielle Palmer

* The Ainsworth Public Library will have a Book Discussion on May 13th with the title of THE GLASS CASTLE by Jeannette Walls at 2 p.m.  This is a true story of the author’s life when she was growing up.  The author’s father was an alcoholic who greatly preferred poker to gainful employment and wasn’t above stealing the family grocery money to purchase liquor.  His wife could barely be bothered to raise her children.  Walls and her siblings had to fend for themselves, providing their own food, shelter and clothing—even if it meant picking through dumpsters.  Eventually the children found their way in New York.  Their parents followed them, choosing to be homeless even as their children prospered.  This title is remarkable for its lack of both sentimentality and anger and is a testament to the power of human determination. The Library has multiple copies available for check out as well as a CD.  Check out the book, read it, and come join in the discussion on this memoir of a child’s triumph over a dysfunctional family problems and poverty.
